Happy Belated Barbie!

Barbie Loves Mac- via Glamlive

When I heard about Barbie's birthday via NPR, I started to reminisce about my barbies.
One of my earlier memories about barbie was quite horrifying to a 6 year old. My sister, Val had just gotten a new barbie that came with her own make up kit. You could put eyeshadows and blush on her and remove it with the make up remover that came with the barbie. I was playing with it without her permission and after I put the make up on the barbie, I decided to wipe off the make up but I could not find the remover. My heart raced! Eep! About to be found out, must wipe make up off! Water? No, that will not do, I know! Nail polish remover! To my horror, as I wiped from left to right, her eyes disappeared! AHHHH! I mean, eyeless barbie!! I panicked again and went to my desk and got a sharpie. I quickly put two dots for her eyes. Two sharpie dots. I realised how ugly it looked but put it back anyways. I got into heaps of trouble for that. Apparently my sister had no appreciation for minimalistic eyes that I had so graciously given her barbie.

The other horrifying barbie related event happened when I was 12 (Oh my gosh, is that horribly late to still be playing with a barbie? Oh well, I was!). I often washed my barbie's hair because I loved how the hair appeared so soft and feathered underneath the water. I had always let them dry by air but that one day I decided to dry it by using my hair dryer.. on high. As I combed her hair, her comb got stuck in a glup, what is this? I pull a bit more and moved my hand to see that my barbie's hair has molded together in a molten plastic disaster! Ah! Her hair has melted! I'm sure she became Ken afterwards.

Our barbies really had pretty decent lives, all 8 of them. Yes, all 8 of them. Well, I shared them with my sister but heck, we had more than we knew what to do with! They were kept in a wicker basket with an array of single shoes and pepto bismol coloured hair brushes. Actually, we were down right spoiled. Our barbies had a three story house that must have left them with a crooked neck because they could only fit in there when they were sitting down. They didn't mind because they could always chillax in the jaccuzzi we had for them. Yes! A jaccuzzi, that had bubbles when we pushed the pump.

Our barbies lived in style. One thing that Mum didn't buy us were Kens or many barbie clothes. Our solution to our lack of Kens were to sacrifice one of our barbies and cut her hair off and ignore her boobies so that she immediately turned into a he. Barbie clothes are so expensive that we only bought them at garage sales and eventually, I used old clean socks to make clothes for them. Yes, a fashion designer in the making. Using the elastic part of the sock, holes were cut for arms and voila! A dress that hugs all of Barbie's curves and never shrinks in the wash!

Anyone remember those huge barbie heads? I had one. It was a barbie with a head the size of my head and she stopped at the shoulders. It was a barbie head for me to play with her hair. Her hair was not that long, not long enough for me to braid them. So I did alot of brushing, brushing polymer hair.

Ah, memories.

Love your Barbie stories! I've had my own disasters as well, cut their hair, etc. I guess our barbies were all well-loved. :)

Great stories! They made me smile. Specially how they illustrate that bond between sisters. They reminded me of mine. Sister that is. I never had Barbies but my sister was devoted to hers and I recall some interesting haircut and styling situations

Ahhh....Barbies. Those were fun stories! The only Ken I had was a 1979 Ken, then my cousin and I (she was like my sister) were given Michael Jackson dolls, and he became the new 'Ken' and old Ken became a bad guy. THEN, I got Derek from Barbie and the Rockers...oooOOOOoohhh!! Barbie was IN LOVE! I actually still have ALL my barbies from when I was a kid. I didn't get clothes either, my mom made them all. Maybe I should do a barbie post?? Hhmm...
