marin snail mucus

"one of the earliest samples of the first synthetic dye, Mauveine, paved the wya for a new dye industry. Until then, the natural source of purple day was the mucus of a marine snail from the Mediterranean region, but its extraction made it expensive."



- reading this huge behemoth book of SCIENCE: THE DEFINITIVE VISUAL GUIDE by DK publishing. I bought it for my step brother who is fast becoming a science geek (loves!). I will give it to him when I get to NZ but for now... I can geek out myself!
